Ignoring the elephant in the room

  • Zitat

However, in pointing out that some foreign cultural traditions are crimes in this country while ignoring some of our own cultural traditions, I fear she may be ignoring the elephant in the room.

Calling unnecessary genital surgery on a girl ‘‘mutilation’’, but on a boy ‘‘circumcision’’, shows just how far we still have to go in recognising that not all traditions are harmless and without consequence.

    Schönes Bild!

Indeed, as the history of female circumcision suggests, if male circumcision
were confined to developing nations, it would by now have emerged as an in-
ternational cause celebre, stirring passionate opposition from feminists, physicians, politicians, and the global human rights community. If routine medical
circumcision didn't exist today, no one would dare to invent it.

  • Wobei man natürlich sagen muss, dass der Elefant im Wohnzimmer eine typisch englische Redewendung und keine sonderlich originelle Metapher ist.
Aber treffend ist die Redewendung auf alle Fälle.
