Ten days after the Florida Board of Medicine voted to revoke his medical license, OB-GYN Berto Lopez performed a circumcision anyway. He botched it, severing the child’s penis and adding another name to a long list of patients whose mangled procedures caused the board to revoke his license in the first place.

Jurors saw graphic photos of the circumcision Monday, some squirming in their seats while attorney Gary Cohen described the procedure that reduced the infant’s penis to a “bleeding, scabby mess.” They deliberated for 30 minutes...

The mother waited outside while the doctor cut off a third of her baby's penis, severing his urethra. Lopez told the father, who stood beside him, not to worry. The bleeding was normal, he said.

Lopez sutured the wound and tried to stop the bleeding using wooden sticks tipped with silver nitrate, a caustic material.

Cohen said Lopez previously blamed the failed circumcision on a congenital deformity, though the midwife who delivered the child testified Monday that no such deformity existed.

After 45 minutes without success, he sent the family home with gauze and told them the bleeding would eventually stop. He recommended they give the child Tylenol [Paracetamol] to help with the pain.

The father said he was "astounded" that Lopez hadn't referred the parents immediately to the emergency room, and that he hadn't made an effort to save the amputated tissue. Too little tissue remained for reconstructive surgery, the doctor told them.
