A number of pre-literate societies adopted cutting procedures on the genitals of males and females (usually as children), at different times and for different reasons. At the end of the nineteenth century Britain (followed by its white colonies) and the USA took it up as a “health” measure for infants and young boys. Today the most likely reason for a male to be circumcised is because his parents are Muslims or Americans: together, these two categories account for the vast bulk of the 25 per cent or so of the world’s male population who are circumcised."
