A former doctor used a rusty medical instrument to circumcise children and gave insufficient pain relief, a court has heard.
Mohammad Siddiqui, 58, from Birmingham, caused "unnecessary pain and suffering" to 23 children from Muslim families, Southwark Crown Court was told.

Mr Siddiqui carried out circumcisions at clients' homes "as quickly as possible to maximise profits", prosecutor Ben Douglas-Jones KC told the jury.

When interviewed by officers in 2019, the defendant said it was sometimes "difficult to know" why babies were crying...

He told police he had carried out 1,200 to 1,500 such procedures since 2012....

Police also found a “circumcision immobiliser” in the back of his Toyota car, a device used to hold children in place during circumcisions and considered unacceptable in NHS practice.

Anja Hohmeyer of the Crown Prosecution Service said: “Siddiqui practised these circumcising acts in an unsafe and unsanitary environment and so meted out painful cruelty to children leaving them with emotional and physical scars.“He showed a complete disregard for the impact of his actions on his victims, families, and communities

Our investigation related to Siddiqui’s criminal actions whilst undertaking circumcision procedures and was not concerned with the practice of circumcision itself.

A former doctor has been jailed for five years and seven months after admitting he caused "painful cruelty to children" by running a mobile circumcision service.

Siddiqui's circumcisions variously left boys' penises as "black", "necrotic", 'smelling foul' and "inverted and not normal".

One boy was so badly injured he was hospitalised for two weeks and had to undergo a lumbar puncture, also known as a spinal tap.

The judged noted a patient complaint brought to the attention of the General Medical Council in which an anaesthetic administered by Siddiqui during a circumcision "caused a severe adverse reaction such that the child nearly died."
