The most memorable experience I took part in was the Maasai circumcision ceremony celebration. Once every 12-14 years, all the men aged 16-24 are circumcised. I was honored to be one of the few women ever to be welcomed to view this event. The village wakes up at 3 a.m. and all the men line up and one by one are circumcised in front of the entire village. They are required not to show any emotion or heavy breathing, as this would bring dishonor to their family. Once all the men are circumcised, they go into a hut to rest and then the celebration begins. The fathers sacrifice a goat on behalf of their sons. As part of the community, I drank the sacrificial blood and ate raw goat liver.
