Q: What is your reaction to the attacks in several European countries against Jewish religious practices such as circumcision and ritual slaughter?
BL: The freedom of religion in the EU is a fundamental right, and it is a human right in general. It has to be protected in the same way as other fundamental rights, human rights and interests of society. As a consequence, however, as soon as several rights are affected, they need to be balanced out, meaning that even within the scope of a society that supports fundamental freedoms, there can be limitations – including to religious activities.
