American Jews received an odd Christmas message from one of the country’s most prestigious newspapers yesterday. The Washington Post published an article by Swiss parliamentarian Liliane Maury Pasquier titled “Is circumcision a right?” The piece was a disingenuous defense of the resolution passed by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe’s Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development, which she chairs, to endorse children’s right to physical integrity. The purpose of the vote was to give a crucial boost to efforts to ban circumcision throughout Europe, a heretofore-marginal cause that has recently gained ground in Germany and Scandinavia.

There is not, and cannot be, a “right” to circumcise young boys. Children are not mini-beings with mini-human rights. By contrast, in an accompanying recommendation, our assembly invited European governments to consider making “children’s right to physical integrity” a continent-wide standard. The assembly’s resolution cannot be rescinded or altered. However, as we hoped, debate is underway — though not always in the most focused or productive manner. (What does it say about the quality of opponents’ arguments if calling for a public debate is seen as a precursor to oppression and pogroms?)

(JWvG)

Israel’s circumcision interventions draw mixed reception from European Jews:

Da gab es wohl auch schon in der Vergangenheit Probleme:

The activist recalled a vocal disagreement that leaders of Germany’s Jewish community had last year with Eli Yishai, who at the time was Israel’s minister of internal affairs, and Yona Metzger, who was then Israel’s chief Ashkenazi rabbi. (Metzger has since been arrested in Israel on fraud and bribery charges.) Germany’s Central Council of Jews said that the Israelis had done more harm than good in their response to a German court ruling in Cologne that said circumcision amounted to a criminal offense.

“Metzger said there was no reason why we shouldn’t have a doctor present at every milah. That’s not a message we want to spread,” the activist said. “He said unhelpful things and put us in a difficult position.”

Ein Arzt bei einer Operation? Ja, wo kommen wir denn da hin?

“One of the major advantages to this Israeli involvement is that, no matter what the size of the local Jewish community, there’s likely to be an Israeli embassy present with politically intelligent insight and open channels of communication with senior government officials,” Cohen said.

      Wide open.

So what?

European Circumcision Debate Will Include Jewish American
Psychologist and Author Ronald Goldman Criticizes the Practice</big>

BOSTON – January 7, 2014 – Ronald Goldman, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Circumcision Resource Center,
a nonprofit educational organization in Boston, has been invited by the
Council of Europe to participate in an interdisciplinary dialogue about
circumcision at a meeting in France on January 28.

      There
is a growing European debate about circumcision. In October the Council
of Europe, an organization of 47 member States, overwhelmingly passed a
      non-binding resolution
that called circumcision, among other procedures, a violation of the
physical integrity of children according to established human rights
standards. Circumcision is uncommon in Europe except among Jews and
      Muslims.

As the only non-European invited to this meeting, Dr.
Goldman said, “I look forward to contributing to the effort to raise
awareness about circumcision in Europe in light of its physical,
sexual, and psychological harm.” He is the author of Circumcision: The Hidden Trauma and Questioning Circumcision: A Jewish Perspective.

Information from the Circumcision Resource Center and the Jewish Circumcision Resource Center
(a section of the CRC) was used to support the Council’s report on the
resolution. The resolution, which received international media
attention, urges member States to raise awareness, provide training,
initiate public debate, and promote an interdisciplinary dialogue about
      the procedures.

Other invited guests to the meeting include an
official representative of the French Jewish community, a
representative of the Muslim community from Turkey, and a medical
      professional from Germany.
      About CRC
      The
Circumcision Resource Center has the purpose of informing the public
and professionals about the practice of male circumcision. Its mission
is to raise awareness and facilitate healing. Since 1991, the Center
has been a valuable source of male circumcision information for parents
and children's advocates; childbirth educators and allied
professionals; medical, mental health, and academic people; Jews; and
      others. Dr. Goldman
has participated in over 200 media interviews with local and national
radio and television programs, newspapers, and periodicals. He also
gives lectures and seminars on circumcision and counsels parents and
      circumcised men.
