"The traditional methods of relieving children's pain during venipuncture, circumcision, etc. were the ethyl chloride spray and the "sugar plum", a cube of sugar sprinkled with whisky and sucked through a gauze. In my experience neither was half as quick or effective as pre- mixed 50% nitrous oxide and oxygen gently wafted over the child's face. It is safe, can be used by anyone and has the great advantage of causing venodilation. As an anaesthetist I also found it most useful in adults when faced with very difficult venipuncture."
