    • Orthodox Jews Clash Over Circumcision

""Whenever it seems that the modern world is inserting itself into matters of ritual," Heilman says, "there are certain elements in the Jewish world that say, 'No. We will stand guard over what is genuinely appropriate in ritual, and not the modern world.' "

And those elements seem unlikely to bend to the will of City Hall. Mohel Cohn may speak for many Orthodox Jews who say they will not obey the new regulation. "The mayor is the mayor of the city of New York," says Cohn. "But we have a mayor; he's the mayor of the universe. We gonna follow his instructions."

    • Some Israeli Parents Rethink Ritual Circumcision

The question of whether to circumcise a newborn son is no question at all for most observant Jews. In Europe, the practice has come under fire. This summer, a German regional court ruled that circumcision is physical abuse, and a Swiss hospital temporarily banned the procedure. The debate has infuriated Jewish community leaders there
These days, though, there are expectant mothers who are rethinking the ritual, like Hila Petreikov.
"You are cutting a helpless 8-days-old baby," she says. "There are risks involved. You are cutting a healthy tissue. I think you should really think about it if you want to do it or not."
In 1997, a few Israelis founded an advocacy group called the Organization Against Cutting Babies' Sex Organs. The name was just as provocative as the message. Just registering the group in the phone book took some convincing, says anti-circumcision activist Ronit Tamir..

    • To Circumcise Or Not Circumcise, That Is The Question

I've read lots of articles about the pros and cons, but there is no definitive answer. Men go through life uncircumcised just fine. Men also go through life circumcised just fine. I'd rather not do it and let him decide as he gets older, than do it and remove the choice altogether. He deserves to make that choice for himself.
I know this is a hot topic, and there are supporters in each camp. But ultimately, it is our decision as parents of this new little being to do what we think is best for him. It is everyone's decision as parents. I'm not knocking those who decide to circumcise. It's a choice, with neither outcome the right one or wrong one. Just a different one than some others may choose.

A lawyer for Orthodox Jewish groups asked a federal judge on Tuesday to throw out a New York City regulation requiring parents to sign a consent form before their infant sons undergo a form of Jewish ritual circumcision in which the circumciser uses his mouth to remove blood from the incision.
[Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald] raised a hypothetical situation in which a single religious group amputates left pinkie fingers at birth, and asked Mr. Dvoretzky whether the city would have the authority to regulate the activity. He said it would depend upon whether the practice caused immediate, serious harm.

Der Anwalt meint also, man dürfe alles amputieren, was man wolle, wenn es keine unmittelbare ernstzunehmende Schädigung mit sich bringe. Also auch Ohren weg, kleine Zehen usw.usf.

"Judge Buchwald also said there was a direct comparison to consent requirements placed on physicians when they perform a circumcision.Mr. Dvoretzky called that an “apples and oranges” comparison, because a physician would not perform a metzitzah b’peh."
