Despite the vast literature on the harmful effects of genital surgies (El-Defrawi, Lofty, Dandash, Refaat & Evada, 2001; Larsen & Okonofua, 2002) our data doesn’t support the presence of long-term complications. Nevertheless, even if in our study FGM did not present risks of physical harm, it is a violation of women’s human rights.
The suppression and the control of women’s sexuality through the mutilation of their genitals are demeaning to women as they deny an aspect of their humanity. In addiction, the present study should be replicated on a larger sample to determine the association between type of circumcision and physical-psychosexual complications. We should help men and women coming from these cultures to understand that. They may change a tradition without losing their values and their identity.
