"Earlier research done by Dr. Taddio found that, on the contrary, exposing young children to painful experiences shaped their perception to pain for life, and that they subsequently suffered far more pain, even during minor procedures.
In the study, health professionals were able to insert an IV line in children who received the lidocaine cream on the first try 74 per cent of the time; among children who received a placebo, the rate was 55 per cent.
When the numbing cream was used, inserting the IV took 6.7 minutes on average, compared to 8.5 minutes for the children who received no painkiller.
Just one bad experience can give a kid needle-phobia for life," Dr. Taddio said. "We can remove a lot of that anxiety with a very simple treatment."
