Auf die Frage, wie man die Initiationsrituale der Xhosa und anderer südafrikanischer Stämme mit den medizinischen Beschneidungskampagnen koppeln könnte, ist man in Südafrika natürlich schon längst gekommen. Schliesslich bestand die Initialstudie, die im Township "Orange Farm" in der Nähe von Johannesburg von Bertrand Auvert durchgeführt wurde, zu einem guten Teil aus Teilnehmern des Initiationsrituals.

"Dr Taljaard also spoke to CHAPS’ experiences in negotiating and forging cooperation between TMC and initiation stakeholders in an effort to integrate MMC into the traditional initiation ritual.Mthetho Tshemese, a scholar pursuing a PhD in healthy masculinities and one-time initiate, discussed the initiation ritual as an important conveyor of masculinity.
Tshemese went on to discuss the darker side of initiation including how certain culturally loaded behaviours can expose initiates and their partners to HIV.
The speaker’s presentations sparked a lively Q&A session among the 22 guests who attended the café. Discussions included women’s roles in the context of circumcision and the flexibility of culture and tradition."
